Computer Science Programs in USA

20-May-2021

We live in an era where computers have become a major necessity. They have been integrated in almost everything that we do. Our lives have gotten easier in the age of technology. It’s always good to have an extra bit of knowledge in computers because you don’t know when it might come in handy. But from a career point of view, a computer science degree is quite valuable for companies like Facebook, Google, Microsoft and Apple. Although, from where you have acquired your degree also becomes a matter of interest while getting a job in one of these conglomerates.

There are quite a few esteemed Universities in USA which offer excellent courses in the field of Computer Science. The good thing about US is that there is no shortage of options if you’re looking for good computer science schools. A few of those are listed below:

  1. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)  MIT has been the top ranked college in Computer Science 6 years on the trot. It has ties to all big corporations and the employment rate of MIT graduates is very high. It also has the largest Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS). Students are offered such an EECS program where both these subjects are combined into a major and there’s absolutely no pressure as the curriculum is quite flexible and goes with practical, intensive coursework.

  2. Stanford University Here’s the second ranked university for Computer Science courses in the United States. Founders & co-founders of major companies like Netflix, Google, YouTube, Instagram and WhatsApp were Stanford graduates. Since Stanford is situated in the heart of Silicon Valley, its computer science department really benefits from it.

  3. Carnegie Mellon University  Based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Carnegie Mellon University is the third ranked University for Computer Science programs in the US and in the entire world. The credit for research in various fields in Computer Science such as computer networks, robotics, software engineering, programming languages, parallel processing and the invention of the smiley face emoticon goes to researchers from Carnegie Mellon.

  4. University of California, Berkeley (UCB)  UCB ranks fourth amongst the top Computer Science Universities of US & the world and it offers two selective undergraduate programs – a Bachelor of Arts in Computer Science and like MIT, the Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering & Computer Sciences (EECS) which combines its two subjects into a major.

  5. Harvard University  Harvard is the 5th ranked University in the US and holds the 7th rank globally. The ‘John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences’ of Harvard is credited for its ground breaking research work to solve the fundamental problems in engineering and science.

  6. Princeton University  Many notable figures in the field of Computer Science have graduated from Princeton. Among them are the ‘father of computer science’ Alan Turing, Amazon CEO and founder Jeff Bezos, and Google executive Eric Schmidt.

  7. University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) Over 50 years ago in October 1969, UCLA became the birth place of Internet. The first message was sent by a tech team of the UCLA through the earliest form of computer network, the ARPANET. This is what the Internet was then based on. Surely this is amongst the top Computer Science schools.

Other Universities which should be amongst your considerations for Computer Science programs are University of Washington, Columbia University, University of Texas, Cornell University, California Institute of Technology (Caltech) and New York University (NYU). USA surely is the best country to offer Computer Science programs.
